The SA Football Association (Safa) have offered incoming Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira a R1.8m per month salary. Don't you think this is too much? And if not, what makes him worth all that money? Will he be able to prove his worth in time or can we already assume that this was a mistake?Isn't R1.8m per month a little too much for Bafana Bafana's new coach?
The salary offered to Parreira is slightly less than he would normally be accustomed to and about half of what top Premiership players in England earn. For the likes of Ferguson,Wenger,Mourinho even Ericcson etc it is spare cash. In South African terms it is a fortune but what you are not seeing is that it is paid by FIFA who "donated" $10 million to your FA to assist in building a team for 2010. So you are a little out of touch with the realities of professional football at the top end. Is he worth it? No if you go on the performances of Brazil in Germany when it was widely accepted that they had the best individual players and only made it to the last 16 with some unimpressive performances. If you go on his record in Saudi Arabia then you will also reach the same conclusion. He is not the answer for SA for the very simple reason that you do not have international class players who can cut it in the major leagues in Europe and neither does he have the time or ability to nurture them. All the other major names touted fell by the wayside and you can safely assume they were never interested and it was merely a publicity stunt for the locals.Your answer lay in Lucas Radebe but in another shambles in your football administration he has walked out of his job as 2010 Ambassador totally disillusioned, back to a coaching position with Leeds Utd. South African football is in a bad way with perhaps only Pienaar,McCarthy and Fortune , who will both be over the hill by 2010 if they are not already there, as your leading lights. So you can assume this was a major mistake and the money would have been better spent on facilities for youngsters to graduate in the game which would have been better for all of South African football in the long term. The other point that comes to mind is that your news reports say that his salary was approved by your Parliament which would put the South African FA in breach of FIFA rules which expressly state the Governments are not allowed to interfere with National Football teams. Greece were recently suspended from all UEFA competitions for precisely this reason and I wonder if FIFA will act against the SA football authorities if it comes to their attention.
Hey porg....
Its insane for any1 to earn that much money... But what can we say, this government of ours is so skrewed up at the moment.. lets see how hard they fall if their plan doesnt work, no wait, they not gonna fall, us tax payers are....
dammmmm b-e-people.Isn't R1.8m per month a little too much for Bafana Bafana's new coach?
Porgie its a crime that some can earn that kind of money on a hopeless case anyway but hey as south africans around here say its..... proudly south african...... screw up yea........i wonder what Jake White earns... but then again its a black empowerment country so let them spend it who cares and if you care its hopeless anyway
hello there im not much of a soccer fan but i have to agree with you there i do think that is alot of moeny to spend on our loosing soccer team. but only time will tellIsn't R1.8m per month a little too much for Bafana Bafana's new coach?
that is really a lot!!! they play like crap anyway!!! o well... what can you do eh
well lets think about it...
they can dish out 1.8 mil to a soccer coach, that's team wasn't in the last world cup.
but when it comes to aids orphans, homeless and jobless people, our country has no money....
i think it is definitely too much!
That is far too much! South Africa should not be worried about Bafana Bafana going to the World Cup because we have other things to worry about! There is a chance that the SPCA might be closing down because they cant afford it anymore but they can however afford to pay R1.8m A MONTH to a new coach! That is rediculous!!! We have poverty in South Africa and people with AIDS and cancer, the LEAST we can do to help is donate these poor people R1 Million a month!
Kim :(
I don't know what the normal salary ranges of a national coach are, but what I do know is that Clive Barker was just as good as any other international coach, and when he was in France in 1998 coaching Bafana-Bafana in the World Cup, he asked for a salary increase which was still far too lower than R1.8M per month. SAFA refused, and thought he was blackmailing the South African Football Squad. I wonder what has suddenly changed now. As it looks, R1.8M per month is ridiculous. At the present moment I wish more money could be spent in improving the national safety and security.
it is a rather steep salary. You cant buy passion though, SA soccer "stars" are a bunch of lazy people. They dont have any passion when it comes to playing for SA. You can pay a coach R100 million a month, it doesnt change what the players think or do.
I'm sorry, but R1,8 m IS SO A MISTAKE. I mean hello, everybody is going off about the poverty in SA, the AIDS victims, the crime for PETE'S SAKE!!!!
Do you know what even a month's salary could mean in this country. And by the way who do you think are going to pay for it. At the end of the day, is it you and me my fellow South African friend. Glad to say, it would not affect the South African sitting overseas as much.
But still, what can ONE person do with R1.8m Rand PER MONTH THAT IS!!!!
South Africa's soccer team is not up to what it should be, I mean how can South Africa host the 2010 soccer cup (and don't get me wrong, I am proud of South Africa winning the bid), and we didn't even participate in the past world cup? How does that work.
The 2010 World cup could have mean so much to this country, whether it is for economy, or people to see (like "baldy") that South Africa is a great place, but instead, we give it to some guy, thinking he can save our Bafana Bafana team.
I just think that the money could go for much better things, maybe sending police officers on a course to be better in what they do.
And they say South Africa hasn't got money! TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT OUR BAFANA BAFANA COACH EARN!
Verseker!!!!
The only way Bafana Bafana is gonna get into the world cup is by hosting it! We are not Brasil and Parreira is gonna find that out really soon! R1.8 is 600grand more than Mbeki makes a YEAR!! Now safa say they expect of him to win the african cup of nations in 2008 and 2010 and atleast get to the third round of the world cup?!! Whatever!!! He wont last till end 2007!!
It's a bloody joke!!
Wie dink hy is hy????
Hi there Porgie
I think R1.8million per month is ridiculous, especially considering the poverty in SA. Personally I'd much prefer to see SAFA donating R1.5 million / month to good charities and paying some coach R300k / month.
I mean, you'll struggle on R300k / month, but somehow you'll make ends meet? ;)
The guy has lead 4 teams to world cup victory, so that cannot be downplayed.
Dunno, seems like a waste to me?
Cheers
