Why has there never been an NHL team in Seattle?

A new arena, a built-in regional rivalry with Vancouver, and established sports fans -- fans in good football cities usually also like hockey. And there is history, as the Seattle Metropolitans played for the Stanley Cup three times, becoming the first U.S. team to win it, in 1917. But they folded with the rest of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in 1926. Why not bring the NHL to Seattle? I know Portland and their new arena tried to lure the Penguins, so it's possible. Why has there never been an NHL team in Seattle?
ok...have u seen the attendance for the supersonics and mariners??

that's probably part of the reason there isn't a team out there.
Because they don't have a NHL Type Arena in seattle If I we're you I would stop the NBA's Sonics from Moving to Oklahoma City. Why has there never been an NHL team in Seattle?
I'm not sure, it may be because of lack of venue. The only place that might be able to host NHL hockey is the Tacoma Dome, and thats good hour or more from Seattle. Seattle is trying to find a way to build a new arena for the NBA Supersonics (the only team in town with a championship unless you count WNBA) so they wont leave town in 2008! I dont see hockey in Seattle a possibility for awile, though I hope I am wrong! I agree that a hockey team in Seattle might run into a rather large and instant fanbase!
It's something that comes up from time to time. With this new arena for the Sonics in the works, they're spreading rumors of bringing in a hockey team here to drum up support for it.

Personally, I doubt it will ever happen. Seattle just doesn't give two s--ts about hockey, and never will. :( They'd rather slup organic soy lattes and fawn over their girly baseball team.

Portland would be a much better NHL city, imho. Why has there never been an NHL team in Seattle?
I saw an interview here in Vancouver with Bettman. He was talking about Seattle, Portland and Las Vegas as potential cities for expansion. One of those cities will get a franchise some day.

I think it would be great if Seattle got one. You are right, the rivalry between Seattle and Vancouver would be great. And since all the Vancouver games are sold out, Vancouver fans would easily drive 2.5 hours to see a Canucks game in Seattle.

I expect a team in Las Vegas first though.
I do not live in Seattle. But always thought it would be cool for them to have an NHL team. I thought of moving there once and I am a huge NHL fan. They should definately consider it.
Makes more sense than Pheonix, Nashville, Florida, Atlanta etc. But it will have to be a relocate. No more expansion!
Seattle could probably support a team, if there is a decent arena they can probably lure in a team like Nashville when they have to move.

Kansas City is probably going to pick up the next available team;
Yes, If there was a revival of the Metropolitans they would already have one Stanley Cup banner. However the league wants to keep the teams where they are if at all possible, and I don't think expansion is in the cards. Given the piles of money in Seattle, I have no doubt a NHL would do all right there.
because there are already too many teams in the nhl- there should only be 20 max. they should take out teams where people dont care about hockey like san jose, dallas, la, etc.
alot of things need to be considered.

First - is there a general interest in the area to support such a huge expense.

2) Someone to finance the team, as well as cost of an arena, and all other expences. Look what happened in Pittsburgh with that teams history. Alot of things go into selecting a city for a professional sports team, esp hockey --- although not really sure what they were thinking putting a team out in the sand dunes in Phoenix.

3) They would need to obtain the rights to a team moving from one location to Seatle, or have an expansion team come into the league in the east so that there was still a balance amongst divisions.Someone to finance the team, as well as cost of an arena, and all other expences
BECAUSE SEATTLE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

JK and thanks for the 2 points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
