It is hilarious to see British people get all hot and bothered, on this website, when they pretend to be offended that Americans use the word "soccer to describe their favorite sport.



1) "Soccer", the word, originated in England.

2) "Rugby football" was called "rugger" and "association football" was called "soccer"

3) "Soccer" comes from the shortening of the word, "association"

4) "Soccer" is used as the name of the sport in a) Canada b) Japan c) Australia d) New Zealand e) South Africa f) Ireland



So, here's a history lesson in "football" for all my British friends. Now you know something about your precious little sport.

In danish: fodbold

In spanish: f煤tbol

In French: football

In Turkish: futbol

in Swedish: fotboll

In Norwegian: fotball

In Czech: fotbal

In Portuguese: futebol

In Dutch: voetbal



It comes from the English "foot" and "ball". You join them and you have "football".

The funny part is that most of those countries call "football" to a game played with the hands...

As you said, the word soccer originated in England as a slang word for the word Association. That being said, the correct name of the sport is Association FOOTBALL. The world governing body is called FIFA not FISA, and the word soccer association is an oxymoron which literally translated means asSOCiation association.
It's not just Brits it's the ignorant people Which can be from any nation of any background
