Why do people get mad when we call it soccer? Why do they hate sports here?

Well I call it soccer in English and futbol, which is football, in Spanish.

But whenever someone calls it soccer, everyone suddenly gets enraged and so mad...like if we just shot them in the leg. As far as I know, the word soccer came from Britain. The real name of the sport, or the first name, is Association Football, correct? People later used assoc for short and later it was changed into soccer...right? They both mean the same thing, and it's just a WORD..and people get mad over a WORD which is sad and pathetic. If we use the word soccer, they tell us "Its football you stupid ******* american!". I don't know...it just makes me kind of depressed to see that people hate us this much :(

Also, why do they hate sports we play here? They want us to respect football/soccer by using the "correct" name, but they just hate American Football, basketball, etc. Well...they basically hate anything related to us. I'm not saying it's jealousy...it's just...hard to explain. I don't know what to do without people hating me :(

Thank you for the answers. ^.^Why do people get mad when we call it soccer? Why do they hate sports here?
Soccer was used in England 1st but when Americans started using the word the English stopped using it because they had no respect for the Americans playing soccer
Who knows why, i call it soccer to, but the reason they might hate americans isnt because there jealous its just because, americans are conceaded and they beleive they are better than every1 else. Why do people get mad when we call it soccer? Why do they hate sports here?
You poor pathetic soul. I empathise with you.

Firstly, the reason people outside the US hate American dominated sports is because you guys claim to be world champions in your domestic leagues.

Baseball is called the World Series. NBA champions are called World Champions. Superbowl winners are referred to as World Champions. It's as if the rest of the world does not matter.

In any case, you are right about the term ''soccer''. It was derived from the word asSOCiation.

Back in the 18th century, the English people usually added the slang ''er'' to every term. Like Job'ber, Rob'ber and Clob'ber. Hence, the term Soc'cer came into existence. It's just that the Americans seemed to have associated the term Soccer with English football and adopted the term Football for their own.
Simple fact is that actually there is no such sport as soccer. The word soccer is just a slang term for the sport of Association Football. Would i be correct in calling the NFL, the national gridiron league or would i be corrected by Americans?

I think people just get annoyed when Americans insist that the name of the sport is soccer and not football.

I don't think people are jealous of America or American sports, it's just that sports such as American football are not really popular or very important on the world stage, yet Americans seem to think that they are world champions. It sometimes appears that the American ego is bigger than reality. Why do people get mad when we call it soccer? Why do they hate sports here?

The use of the word 'soccer' is NOT just used in America. It is used in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan.... to name a few.

I firmly believe it is a fools way of feeling some false superiority in knowledge or skill. They clearly know that when the word soccer is used, the meaning is also 'football'. They make to much of a simple, and basic, concept. Yes, fools sums it up pretty well.

Soccerref
I think you are missing a distinction, which is throwing off your perception a bit. The problem is not a US versus European issue, but rather one of sensible and knowledgeable sports fans around the world versus biased and ignorant sports fans around the world.

There indeed are those in other lands who become upset about Americans calling Association Football soccer, or who hate American sports to the point of ranting about them. However, they are really no different than those Americans who whine on about soccer being boring and a sport for sissies. All lands around the globe, including here in the US, have their fair share of such boorish individuals.

The knowledgeable fans don't care what the game is called, whether it be football, calcio, soccer, or whatever. They are fans of the sport, and are tolerant of other sports as well. That's not to say that they don't dislike any sports, but they don't take their dislikes to the extreme.

A comical example comes to mind regarding the Vancouver Olympics. It seemed that everyday for a few weeks, nothing was on TV except curling. I could have even sworn it was the same woman from Canada who was doing all of it.

I'm not a fan of curling, and quite frankly remain to this day puzzled as to its appeal. Still, however, I recognize that many do like it. I can live with that, and in that regard support curling fans and players. I wasn't on the internet making stupid posts about what the curlers should do with their brooms. I'm sure, however, that many doltish people were.
