Why do Brits call "ketchup" "tomato sauce"?

Ketchup is a unique blend of a vinegar based solution to a vegetable sacue. In this case, tomato sauce is blended with thickening agents and a vinegar based soluation to produce tomato ketchup. There are several types of ketchup (mushroom, carrot, etc), but it is KETCHUP, not sauce. I can see why "chips" are called "crisps" over there (that makes sense). I can definitley see why football is called football over there (that makes much more sense than 'soccer' even though 'soccer' was originally English slang for football (something not many Brits know).... but I do not understand why ketchup is not called by its proper name there.



BQ: What is some North American slang that Brits don't understand? There has to be lots. AND Soccer is not a North American word, it started as a British slang for "asSOCiation Football" which was then said as "soccer" for slang.Why do Brits call "ketchup" "tomato sauce"?
WE ALSO LIKE BROWN SAUCE like hp sauce or fruity brown sauce , oh and fanny here is vagina not ar se or butt lol , and i know americans do not have jaffa cakes , an ice cream is in a cornet not cone , and according to samuel l johnson while filming here the usa does not have sweet pop corn only the salty one , black pudding, tripe , yorkshire puddings , jellied eels , green gravy are all delicasys ,and we also invented the sandwich thanks to lord sandwhich , who only wanted hes butler to bring him something to eat at the card gambling table ,
Of course it's a sauce - it has the general consistency associated with a sauce, it's used as a sauce, it's made from tomatoes so what's the problem? It doesn't matter at all whether it's referred to as ketchup or tomato sauce. Don't sweat the small stuff! We might just as well ask why you spell "sauce" as "sacue" or "solution" as "soluation", or "definitely" as "definitley"Why do Brits call "ketchup" "tomato sauce"?
Its tomato - its a sauce - to me Tomato Sauce makes far more sense than 'ketchup' - even though thats what its labelled as.



Soccer may not be an American word - but its the term you use to describe football as opposed to your American Football. never watch it anyways (both kinds) so it makes no odds to me. It may very well be slang for association football but its very rarely used here, its always been football or futball as it was spelled many years ago.

It's called ketchup on the bottle. I prefer Heinz organic tomato ketchup.



I'm sure there are North American words that we don't understand, just as we have plenty that you don't understand. We are nations divided by a common language!

We call it both because that is what it is. We are different. There are more important things than stressing over this! We use the term soccer too,as well as football.
It is just the fact that people in Britain are not as well educated as they were. Heinz tomato sauce is clearly labelled "Tomato Ketchup".
It's a sauce, made mainly from tomatoes. Anyway, it's sold as ketchup here too - Heinz's Ketchup.
I call it both.................. why is it just the British? Plus, there isn't a 'Proper' name for it...
