this is a mistake millions make, im sure you all know this but the Australian Football League is the governing body of the competition played by the most elite teams/players in the sport of aussie rules footy. its like an englishman saying "lets go to the park and play fifa world cup" when the sport is soccer, or an american saying "lets go play national basketball association" when the sport is basketball.Do you guys ever get annoyed with people calling aussie rules AFL?
I know exactly what you mean, it annoys the crap out of me, when you hear someone say they play AFL, when they only play aussie rules, I think you hear it mainly from the northern states, you never hear them saying 'i play NRL', they say they play league.
They are showing their ignorance of the sport by calling it AFL, as you said AFL stands for Australian Football League and you can't play AFL, but you can play IN the AFL.
Hey Romper, back up a bit mate ! When Corinda High played AR in a high school comp in the early 60's %26amp; I started playing AR in Qld in the 70's, virtually nobody had even heard of VFL. No games were even broadcast on radio and everybody called it Aussie Rules. First regular TV coverage was of the Bears, but the term Aussie Rules still prevails here. Maybe if you look at the education system throughout Aust. and the most recent generation it has spat out, then you will see where the problem of confusing AFL %26amp; Aussie Rules really lies.
Have a great Festive Season every-one !!!!Do you guys ever get annoyed with people calling aussie rules AFL?
I truly love the AFL, Its probably because I cheer for Geelong and they won the Cup this year. While never have had the priviledge of going to Australlia to see a game I guess Im just ignorant of what Im to call it. So why dont you educate me and tell me what to call it rather then criticize me for enjoying a sport I sit up until 2am to watch live. I am a member and friend of Geelong and have spent a few grand on stuff over the years, none of them seem offended when I tap in my credit card number. Enlighten me.
Who gives a RATS TOSSBAG!
We refer to the governing body or the name of the league in many other instances, e.g. The NBA, English Premier League, The NFL, The PGA, MMA, The FIFA World Cup, The 20/20, The Test, The Ashes, The NRL.
Besides only the east coast rugby morons and soccer softcox refer to aussie rules footy as AFL!Do you guys ever get annoyed with people calling aussie rules AFL?
I only call it the AFL when I post on here or talk on the boards...when I speak about footy I say exactly that...are we going to the footy this week...great football game this week (or bad lol depending on what happens).
But no in answer to your question it doesn't annoy me in the least.
I understand what your trying to say but then again no one says "Let's go outside and play some Aussie Rules" that just sounds weird. There is no point getting annoyed because whether they call it "footy", "AFL" or "Aussie Rules" we're all still talking about the same brilliant Australian game. CARN THE HAWKS!!
yeah it sounds weird...
but when you think about it isn't calling the other codes "Rugby League" and "Rugby Union" the doing exact same thing?
the former actually has the same word "league" and union is practically a synonym
