Why do Americans call it Soccer?

Here is why.

To trace the origin of “soccer” we must go all the way back to 1863, and a meeting of gentlemen at a London pub, who congregated with the purpose of standardizing the rules of “football,” which was in its infant years as an organized sport but was growing rapidly in popularity.

Those assembled became the founding members of the Football Association (which still oversees the game in England to this day). And they decided to call their code Association Football, to differentiate it from Rugby Football.

A quirk of British culture is the permanent need to familiarize names by shortening them. “My friend Brian Johnston was Johnners,” said Toye. “They took the third, fourth and fifth letters of Association and called it SOCcer. So there you are.”

So forget that English condescension and carry on calling it soccer, safe in the knowledge that you’re more in tune with the roots of the sport than those mocking Brits

Now you can all stop thinking you are clever when you say that Americans dont even call it the right name. Why do Americans call it Soccer?
Thanks for this. Good info. I hope they all realize how wrong they are now. There are still people answering that cant handle the truth and dont believe facts. Unreal.

@Football Maestro (Jose) - He provided a link to the full article so he isnt trying to make people think these are his own words. So of course he copied and pasted this information. Thats kind of how it works.
Yes soccer was a word coined in England as a colloquial term, but the correct name of the sport is still Association FOOTBALL. Even the world governing body of the sport, FIFA is referred to as the International Football Association not International soccer association. Why do Americans call it Soccer?
It annoys the hell outta me when foreigners call me stupid on a forum or something because I call it soccer. "It's not soccer you idiot it's FOOTBALL!"

I'M not the one who made up the term. I just so happen to be American. We can call it whatever we want.
It's not only America, there's Canada, New Zealand, Australia. Why do Americans call it Soccer?
I don't think they think they're clever by not saying it. To them (and me) soccer just sounds like a stupid word. Simple as that.
idk i say it cause i've lived here most my life.. it would be weird for me to start calling it futbol
Yeah. Teach those buggers a lesson.
Im a American and I went oversea to ****(will not say the name of that specific European country, but I will tell you it wasn't the UK, surprisingly). It seems the worlds perception of us is that where ignorant, fat, suv driving idiots(GOD i love stereotypes of us there soo fun) .Now it would only seem natural that people would call us Americans stupid when we say soccer, but I think the majority of the world should keep on calling it football. Why? well because it validates there ignorance haha no just kidding. The real reason why is because it is what make us American (and other anglophone country's) unique and different from the world. Also remember different is not a bad thing (well it is bad sometime because we are the last county in the world to use the English system of measurement which is SOOO freaking hard to learn compared to metric)
