Let鈥檚 give credit to whom it鈥檚 due for naming of games.
Soccer:
The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer first appeared in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of Association football, often credited to Charles Wreford-Brown.
Charles Wreford-Brown (9 October 1866 鈥?26 November 1951) is usually credited with inventing the word soccer as an abbreviation for association football.
He was born in Bristol and attended Charterhouse School before going on to Oriel College, Oxford University. He was a keen amateur sportsman and played both cricket and football for the university. He later played cricket for Gloucestershire and football for the Old Carthusians and Corinthians, and captained the English national football team several times between 1894 and 1895.
Football:
Like the American college football game from which it sprung, NFL football is a descendant of rugby football, which was imported to the United States from Canada in 1874, and then transformed into American college football after McGill University in Montreal invited Harvard University to Quebec to play a new Canadian version of "rugby football". Professional football in the United States dates at least to 1892, when an athletic club in Pittsburgh paid William "Pudge" Heffelfinger $500 to take part in a game.|||soccer doesnt suck.. Yea i knoew some of this. Countries where soccer is the most popular "football" code, its called football while countries that have their own football codes like US, Australia and Canda, the sport is called soccer derived from assocation football. I personally dont give a hoot. Im smart enough to tell from the context. Both sports are interesting in their own ways.|||Soccer still sucks
